ChatGPT doesn't show my restaurant. Why, and what to do

When someone asks an assistant where to book or order, it answers from what it can read and act on. If it skips your business, or names it but links a marketplace, one of four things is usually wrong with the website. All four are fixable, most of them in an afternoon.

1. The assistant's crawler is turned away at the door

ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity and Google's AI features each fetch pages with their own crawler: GPTBot, ClaudeBot, PerplexityBot and friends. A hosting firewall or a "bad bots" list often refuses them while serving a normal browser fine, and the owner never chose that. Across the city indexes on this site, about a quarter of reachable restaurant websites do this. How to find out and fix it.

2. The site says nothing the assistant can use

An assistant wants your name, address, phone, hours, what you serve and whether you take bookings, in a form it can trust. A short structured-data block gives it exactly that; without one it guesses from text, or takes a marketplace's copy. The copy-and-paste version.

3. The menu is a PDF or a photo

"What do they have and what does it cost" is the most common question. A PDF is read badly, a photo not at all, so the answer comes from a delivery app's copy of your menu, and so does the link. Publish the menu as a page.

4. The only way to book or order is a marketplace

If your booking button goes to a reservation marketplace and your order button to a delivery app, the assistant sends people there, because that is the path that works. Add a direct path on your own domain and it has a reason to send them to you. Bookings and ordering.

What "showing up" means in 2026

Assistants answer with web search on. They read a handful of pages, pick up to a few places and give a link for each. On the Lisbon index, when asked the way people ask ("I'm feeling like chicken tonight, where can I order?"), ChatGPT linked the place's own website for every place it named, Claude for 82% of them and Gemini for 88%, measured on 14 October 2026. Places without a usable site were named without a link, or not at all.
