A little over a mile from downtown LA, where East First Street, Boyle and Pleasant Avenues come together, the Plaza is named for the mariachi musicians who have gathered here in their elegant charro suits since the 1930s, ready to be hired to play in restaurants, at private parties or community events. These professional musicians are the heart of the vibrant community that has grown up around them. The vast majority of the mariachis live in the historic 1889 Boyle Hotel, better known as “Mariachi Hotel,” on the west side of the Plaza. Soon after the turn of the millennium, plans got underway for the Mariachi Plaza Metro Station on the Gold Line Eastside Extension–La Linea del Oro. Anticipating far-reaching changes, MariachiPlazaLosAngeles.org features news, events, stories, links and images to keep us in touch with Mariachi Plaza, its people and its culture.
